After A Root Canal Make Sure To Have A Crown Installed

Following a root canal, a patient should make certain to follow the dentist’s recommendation of having a crown installed on the tooth.  That’s the advice of Dr. Austen Broadbent, a dentist at West Valley City’s Pioneer Valley Dental.

Dr. Broadbent says, “I’ve seen recently a few cases where the person had a very expensive root canal, then never had the crown.  Shortly thereafter, the tooth breaks and has to be extracted.”

Root canals are performed when tooth decay is too deep to be restored with a filling.  Root canals are also done when teeth become abscessed. The procedure involves drilling a small hole in the biting surface of the tooth, and then removing the nerve tissue from the tooth.  When all of the nerve tissue is removed, the dentist widens the canal and fills it with a synthetic material, gutta percha.  A temporary filling is then placed in the original hole.

“After most root canals, we usually recommend that a crown is installed to protect the tooth from breakage and decay.  To make a crown, we first take an impression of your teeth and send it to a lab.  At the lab, a technician will make a crown in the same shape and position as your original tooth.  While you’re waiting for the permanent crown, we’ll fabricate a temporary one out of acrylic or a plastic-type material.  A patient will usually have the temporary crown for a couple of weeks until we can replace it with the permanent crown.  Crowns can be made of gold, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal.  Obviously, the porcelain crowns can be colored to match the rest of the teeth in your mouth,” Dr. Broadbent said.

Dr. Broadbent is the oldest son of Dr. Thomas Broadbent (the founder of Pioneer Valley Dental).  He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Utah and his D.M.D. degree from Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia in May 2009.
