Fighting Bad Breath

Here’s a topic that most people don’t want to talk about—bad breath.  At one time or another, it afflicts everyone.  But, there are things from the staff at Pioneer Valley Dental to help prevent this all-too-common problem.

Usually, good oral hygiene is the answer since the most common cause of bad breath is bacteria.  Bad breath can also be caused by food and drinks like cheese, onion, garlic and orange juice.  Of course, if you use tobacco, you’re also prone to having bad breath.  What’s more, if you’re a non-stop talker, this can contribute to the problem.

Some other causes of bad breath include mouth sores, sinus problems, skipping breakfast, protein-rich foods, illnesses like cancer, syphilis or tuberculosis, indigestion and stomach problems, dehydration, stress, gingivitis and tooth infections.

So, besides regular brushing (including brushing after every meal) and flossing, what can you do to eliminate bad breath?  Here are some easy home remedies that can help:

-Chew mint leaves.

-Dilute half a tablespoon of vinegar into a glass of water.  Gargle for about 10 seconds.

-Put baking soda on your toothbrush while brushing your teeth.

-If you’ve got a dry mouth, eat citrus fruit or grapes.  The citric acid in these fruits can help improve your breath.  Also, eating an apple can help cure bad breath.

-Drink tea made from fenugreek seeds.

-In spite of claims to the contrary, a lot of mouthwashes only provide short-term cures for bad breath.

-Consume lots of fluids like soup and water.

-Avoid alcohol, coffee, sugar, spicy and fried foods.
