Halloween Tips

The Halloween season is upon us! This spooky time of year is all about pumpkin carving, costume parties and most importantly, trick-or-treating. While trick-or-treating is a fun tradition to take part in, the consumption of Halloween candy can also be very harmful to our teeth. According to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau, the average American consumes nearly 26 pounds of candy per year, and a large percentage of that takes place during Halloween. Although Halloween candy can be detrimental to our teeth, there are a few simple tips to follow that will help keep your family’s teeth strong and healthy during the Halloween season.

In reality, it isn’t the amount of sugar that we ingest that causes cavities and tooth decay, but the length of time that sugar is in contact with our teeth. Cavities are caused by acids that are produced by oral bacteria that come from sugar. The longer our teeth are in contact with those acids, the more at risk we become for getting cavities. Brushing and flossing right after you have consumed Halloween candy is one of the best ways you can avoid cavities and tooth decay. It is also recommended to use toothpaste with fluoride, which helps to prevent plaque buildup. If you aren’t able to brush your teeth immediately following the consumption of candy, rinse your mouth with lots of water and avoid drinking beverages like juice and soda that will add to the sugar-causing bacteria.

Sticky candies such as taffy, Jolly Ranchers and lollipops can cause the most harm to our teeth. Chocolate is often a better choice because it contains oils that can actually work against acid formation. An even healthier option would be to purchase non-candy items.

And there you have it! Just a few simple tips to follow that will allow you to enjoy all of the fun festivities of the Halloween season. And remember to schedule regular cleanings and check-ups at Pioneer Valley Dental to keep your teeth looking and feeling their best!
