Smiling Will Make Your Life Worth While And Possibly Longer

The lyrics to the song, “Smile,” say in part, “Smile, what’s the use of crying?  You’ll find that life is still worthwhile if you just smile.”  In addition to helping one’s psychological outlook, smiling actually has real health benefits, according to Dr. Curtis Smith of Pioneer Valley Dental.

“Research has shown that smiling can improve your physical well being.  When you smile, your blood pressure actually drops and your immune system works better.  Plus, smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin.  When your body releases these three ingredients, you just feel good.  It’s like a natural drug,” Dr. Smith said.

Dr. Smith adds that there are plenty of other reasons to smile.  “Smiling improves your attitude.  It helps those around you feel good, because a smile is infectious.  Plus, if you’re smiling, you’re simply more attractive.  You appear to be younger and more successful.  So, as the song reminds us, ‘If you smile through your fear and sorrow, smile and maybe tomorrow, you’ll see the sun come shining through for you,’” he says.

Dr. Smith advises that you protect your smile by having at least two yearly dental checkups along with good hygiene practices.

Dr. Smith did his undergraduate studies in the area of biochemistry at Northwestern University and Brigham Young University.  He graduated as valedictorian of the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 1993.  After he graduated, he joined the Pioneer Valley Dental staff.
