Visit Your Dentist At Least Twice A Year

Why is it so important that you visit your dentist every six months?  It’s not just for the obvious task of checking for cavities.  In fact, your dentist could identify oral cancer, diabetes or vitamin deficiencies through regular checkups.

According to the staff at Pioneer Valley Dental, a checkup should include an evaluation of the health of the patient’s gums and mouth.  During a regular checkup, your dentist can detect symptoms of oral cancer, like lumps or bumps or irregular colored patches inside the mouth.  On the other hand, diabetes can cause gum disease and even cavities, since the higher the blood sugar level, the more acid there is in your body wearing away at your teeth.

Checkups can also include examinations of the face, bite, saliva and movement of the lower jaw joints.  If everything is fine, the dentist or dental hygienist will clean the teeth.  This cleaning removes calcified plaque (also known as tartar) that can build up in hard to reach places and that can’t be removed with everyday brushing.  Dentists or dental hygienists use a scaler, a metal instrument with a blade-like end, to scrape off tartar above and below the gum line.  Some dental offices are now using an ultrasonic vibrating device that shakes loose the tartar, followed by a rinsing with a stream of water.  The teeth cleaning process is completed with a polishing using a lightly abrasive paste and flossing.  Since the teeth are now smooth, this makes it more difficult for tartar to accumulate until the next cleaning.

While six months between visits is usually adequate for most patients, some individuals with problems may require more than just two visits each year.
